ABRAZO CULTURAL

I volunteered to create a mobile app for an NGO in Barcelona that helps immigrants integrate into the community by offering language courses, cultural workshops and specialized training.

The mission of the organization is to encourage multicultural tolerance within the local communities by creating opportunities for intercultural awareness and connection.

By helping to break down stereotypes and fight prejudices that immigrants often face in Barcelona, Abrazo Cultural facilities their social and professional inclusion.

My role in this project was to create the design for a dedicated mobile app, from prototyping and testing, to conducting user research and refining.

The organization already had a website. However, the app needed to facilitate additional cultural exchange through intuitive features like interactive learning and community-building workshops.

Challenges

  • Update teachers' schedules

  • Make sure that users could access the correct information about events and confirm enrollments

Research

(Usability Study)

After the first round of usability testing, I identified various problems to be solved.

These were the most common pain points:

  • Users found it difficult to access accurate and updated information about language classes and cultural workshops.

  • Information needed immediate update due to high demand and limited resources.

  • Users thought the event registration process was confusing due to a complex and cluttered user interface.

Here we can see the extended version of the Home Page screen.

After the usability test, I improved the interface by adding colors, increasing gaps between paragraphs, and making the burger menu more accessible and intuitive.

In the 'Embrace Barcelona' section, I made changes to improve the page readability, and added brand colors to Call to Action buttons.

The main goal was to keep the page accessible and informative so that users could easily register for events.

For the form page, I maintained the basic structure as in the the webpage, adding only the brand colors to enhance readability.

The focus was to keep the interface simple and intuitive, creating a natural flow to facilitate event registration.

When the users confirm what activity they want to enroll to, it's showed the confirmation and other options to keep navigating through other sections.

CONCLUSION
and
FOLLOW UP

The NGO keep growing offering different workshops, testing different themes and increasing the network with teachers of various nationalities.

The expansion of the services services offered by Abrazo Cultural will allow users to book classes and language courses, such as: Arabic, Spanish, French and Russian.

I learned that Barcelona was a good example of a cosmopolitan city that promotes inclusion and now is possible to use similar strategies in other cities around the world.
